How to make your own handwriting font

It’s easy! For best result fill in all the text on the template. Also the scanning is very crucial in making your font look great.

Step 1. Download the template. Click here if you want a printed handwriting font. Click here if you want a connected script font. Click here if you want your signature font.

Step 2. Print out the template and get to work with a good black pen – not lead, rollerball can work but often gets very thin when scanned a soft black pen works best – the more of the template you fill in – the more complete your font will be, also the extra lines are important as I often use them to exchange characters that don’t fit in from the separated characters on the first page.

Step 3. When you are satisfied with your work – put the sheets in the scanner. Here comes another important task. Scan them at 600dpi black and white only and save them as .tif or .tiff. This can be tricky since many scanners trick you into scan at more colors even though it looks like it’s only 2. The result of a 600dpi file with more colors than 2 is a huge file which can be hard to send to me due to mail-size limits, but you can solve this if you open up the scanned sheet in any drawing program you have installed and decrease the color-depth to 2 colors. The result would be a file of around 4 MB’s.

Step 4. Attach the files to en email and send them to shop@yourownfont.com

Step 5. Wait for your preview (will be sent to the address you send your templates from) or go to the order page and pre-pay your font and I will send it to you when I am finished with it. If there are any problems with your scans (this is very often the case so please check before you send them in) I’ll contact you about it to get new scans.

When I was going through things, I found some fonts that didn’t fit with my philosophy that everyone should afford to buy at least five handwriting fonts. I lowered the price on those font families. Among them are Norah, Sharon, Kelli, Ellinor, Nando and Rochelle! It’s not a limited special, it’s a fixed price (even though it looks like a special).

How To install fonts

For Windows Xp, Vista, 7: Save the .zip file to for example your desktop. Open up the explorer and select the file so you can see it’s contents in the right pane. Select the .otf file and drag and drop it out of the zip file to the desktop (or any folder you have created). Then go to that folder in the explorer and right-click the .otf file and choose install font from the menu. That’s it – font installed!

You can also drag and drop it directly on the folder C:\Windows\Fonts\ but it can be good to have it backed up in case you will have to delete it.

For older Windows versions you will have to download a .zip file handler. Like Hamster(free) or WinZip(limited trial) to get the font files out of the zip-file. Then drag and drop it on the C:\windows\fonts\ folder. A restart may be needed.

For Mac OSX: Just download the file and double click on it. Open it up in typbook and choose install font.
